Vitamin Supplements
There are a variety of essential vitamins that you
require to stay healthy and for your body to function normally.
These can either be found in
your daily diet or taken as supplements. Many people do not have a balanced diet
and thus may be deficient in some crucial vitamin and so may benefit from taking
vitamin sup
plements. It is important to seek medical advice before starting to
take vitamin supplements as too much of some vitamins can lead to health
problems of its own and can even be toxic. Taking supplements you don’t need or
taking the wrong supplements could damage your health. A dietary or health
professional is the best person to tell you if you have a deficiency and
recommend a specific vitamin supplement and regime to get you back on track.
They will likely recommend taking supplements as a solution to combat the
immediate deficiency but also tell you how you can alter your diet to gain the
vitamins naturally so you don’t be come dependant on taking supplements for the
rest of your life.
Some groups of people are more prone to deficiencies than others. Although vegan and vegetarian diets, if balanced, can provide all the vitamins and nutrients necessary, due to restricting the diet and cutting out certain food groups (meat and fish), there is a greater chance of deficiencies as some nutrients are found in few other foods. If you are a vegetarian or vegan who takes vitamin supplements or is considering doing so, it is important to be aware that some contain animal products, though there are many that don’t. Check the ingredients and labeling carefully.
Children are another group who may benefit from supplements, especially the very young. This is due to the restricted diet that is often present in the early years of life. Vitamin supplements will help compensate for any natural deficiencies and help the child to grow strong and develop normally. Breast-feeding is known to provide all the nutrients a child needs, but bottle-feed may not contain everything a child requires. For those who bottle feed either by choice or not may be concerned about vitamin deficiencies and may consider vitamin supplements. Most formulae already have supplements included and so no extra supplements are necessary. If you have any concerns, then talk to a health professional to find the right formula through each stage of development.
The elderly or those who are suffering from an illness, are the final group who may benefit from vitamin supplements. This can either be to replace nutrients not gained from the diet due to infirmity or illness or in some cases, to ease the symptoms of some illnesses. Again, it is important to get medical advice.
